Mahitahi Days 2024

Last week most of the Upskills team gathered from around the motu for a 2-day noho at Mataatua Marae in Mangere. With Matariki rising it was the perfect time to get together to reflect on our practice, share ideas and set goals for the year ahead.

The noho was focused on our Māori strategy and were very grateful to have Matina Clarke facilitate some sessions around tikanga, te reo, pepeha, and activities to engage our learners. Our Learning & Design Manager, Saran Read, also led us through a framework for engaging with people (training, social services, hauora) from a Māori lens. We know that what works for our Māori learners, works for everyone!

During the two days, the group also built whanaungatanga, which was particularly important with some new faces and having staff spread across the country. We participated in literacy activities (it got quite competitive) and then broke them down and brainstormed other ways we could meet the outcomes or use the activities in workplace training. We also did some Matariki activities and had a korero on how we could adapt this to our different learner groups. Add in yummy kai, a barre class, a stretch session and a visualisation exercise – we are lucky indeed!

We have an amazing group of staff who have a wide range of strengths so it is great to get together to share good practice and build upon our knowledge so that we can provide the best outcomes for our learners!
