Role: Together they run the sort-line

How has the programme changed your approach to communication, literacy, numeracy, or digital skills? Can you share a moment when it made a difference?

Waiwhitu:
“This programme really awakened my learning side. Most of us came in with little to no computer skills – I was scared of using technology. But this has been such a supportive environment to learn and try new things. Whaea even let us use her own computers and patiently taught us the basics – like how to turn them on!”

Dolly:
“It’s been great getting back into using laptops and different software again. Just having that hands-on time with computers has really helped.”

Tira:
“My biggest challenge was using computers – I had no idea where to even start. But I’ve improved so much since starting the programme.”

What’s been your favourite part of the learning experience so far?

Tira:
“All of it! Honestly, showing up every Tuesday has become a goal I look forward to each week.”

Dolly:
“Whaea always keeps things fresh – every session brings something new. It’s never the same as day one, and that keeps me engaged.”

Waiwhitu:
“Rejoining the library and getting a library card again has been a highlight for me.”

How do you think the new skills you’ve learned will help you in the future?

Dolly:
“They’ll help me so much! I’m learning how to speak up more and be upfront when I need to be.”

Tira:
“I feel more confident expressing myself now – definitely more outspoken.”

Waiwhitu:
“I’m improving in how I communicate – it’s been a big shift.”

If you could describe the programme in three words, what would they be?

Dolly:
Going back to school. I left school in fourth form, so everything I’m learning now – from communication to computer skills, writing my thoughts, and speaking up – has opened my eyes. I’ve even learned how to destress and take a breather when I need it.”

Tira:
Wellbeing – especially learning about budgeting. Most of us didn’t know how to manage our money. When our wages switched to fortnightly, it was tough, but now we know what to do. And Self-grounding – I’ve really loved that.”

Waiwhitu:
Growth. This has inspired me to keep learning more.”

What advice would you give to someone who might feel nervous about joining a programme like this?

Dolly:
“We’ll hold your hand! (laughs) To grow, you’ve got to open up a bit and allow yourself to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Some people think we’re just loud – but it’s because we’re learning, and learning is exciting. You’re never too old to learn.”

Waiwhitu:
“Just give it a go. Once you start, you’ll begin to see yourself differently. What we’ve learned in the classroom is now flowing into our community. Learning from Julia has been such a humble experience – she’s taught us so much, and I’ve learned more about who I am.”

Tira:
“Don’t be afraid! It’s normal to feel nervous, especially when it comes to sharing personal stuff. We were the same in the beginning – but over time, we felt safe and started opening up. Learning has actually become fun!”
