Do you know your ‘sweet as’ from your ‘chur bro?’
Whether it is knowing when everything is ‘kai pai’ or understanding when ‘smoko’ is, understanding Kiwi-isms is key to fitting into any New Zealand workplace.
It’s something the Kia Maia team Higgins Hamilton focused their improvement project on when they realised understanding kiwi-isms could boost inclusion at their site.
Now there’s an easy reference guide in the lunchroom. Their project was part of the wider Kia Maia programme, aimed at growing emerging leaders across Higgins.
Other projects also celebrated diversity and inclusion. The group came up with some great ideas on how to become more aware of each others’ cultures and language. There is now a huge map located on the outside of one of their buildings where everyone can come and put their name on a magnetic strip to show where they come from.
Congratulations to Higgins and all of our Kia Maia learners.
Kia kaha, kia maia, kia manawanui
