6 ideas to get you started

Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI) is a big part of any inclusive leader’s remit.  But how can you, as an experienced leader, equip emerging leaders with the tools to build DEI into their day-to-day? Here are six ideas to get you started.

1. Use inclusive language to create an atmosphere of belonging

Create space for traditionally quieter team members to share their ideas (and not always in a meeting in front of others).  Create a range of channels to hear ideas.

2. Listen. Genuinely listen

Sometimes, if we’re honest, we only listen to figure out where to chip in with our two cents. Be intentional in listening thoughtfully to what your team is telling you.

3. Invite solutions

‘Coach’ rather than ‘tell’ people how to get there.  Be prepared for the solution not be the one in your head – embrace diverse thoughts and ideas.

4. Invite challenges and robust chats

Foster critical thinking in your questions and coaching.

5. Embrace a diverse and multicultural Aotearoa New Zealand

Take opportunities to connect your team through language, celebration, kai and holidays.

6. Being fair doesn’t mean treating everyone the same

This little visual on equity sums it up better than any words can.
