Fa’amuli (Mu) Vi’iga works as a manufacturing operator at Moana Oysters in Wiri, Auckland. Confidence building has been a key part of her learning with Upskills. She’s been at Moana for over a year – check out her learning tips and her story:

Best learning tip:

Always show up, be on time and do your best.

Your biggest challenge in Lockdown:

To continue to work and support my family. I was the main wage earner to provide for the family. I stayed with my Aunty who is like my Mum and the people who brought me here. My husband and two boys also looked to me to provide for the family.

Teach us something:

Be yourself and for your work, I would say always do your best. Do not let others put you down – go for the best and aim high. We always start from scratch and we can work our way up to the top.

Your biggest learning so far from your programme

It gives me real confidence. I am a shy person. Coming into the class and talking around in the circle, even just a few of us in the class, I can speak up and I feel comfortable with myself. Even though English is not my first language, I try to learn new things and new words daily.

How have you used this at work/home?

Here at work, I am more confident. I open up and speak up to our supervisors and our boss. Looking at my Samoan people, I know they try to talk and speak up. But they don’t know what to say as they are too shy. It is hard for them to speak so this class is best to help us. So we work and learn at the same time.

Fa’afetai, Mu for sharing your story!
